One of the subtle ways that Satan has sought to discredit God’s law today has been through the suggestion that since we are saved by grace, we no longer need to keep God’s law. Is salvation by grace a license to sin? Does salvation by grace do away with God’s moral law? What does the bible have to say about this?
What is sin? "Sin is the transgression of the law." 1 John 3:4 Which law is it that points out sin? "I had not known sin, but by the law. Thou shalt not covet." Romans 7:7 God’s law points out or reveals sin. In quoting the true commandment Paul indicates that the law involved is the ten commandment law. Is Grace an excuse for sin? "Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? God forbid." Romans 6: 1, 2
A person saved by the grace of God will live an obedient life. Grace is not an excuse for breaking God’s law; in fact the opposite is true. One who is saved by grace no longer wishes to dwell in sin or live in disobedience of God’s law. If a man violates the traffic law and is caught by the police and acknowledges that he is wrong and pleads for grace, he receives a warning and is allowed to go free. Can he continue to disregard the traffic law? Certainly not because he is under grace, he obeys the law.Contrary to popular opinion grace empowers the believer to keep God’s law.
"For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men. Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously and godly in this present world." Titus 2:11, 12 What is the purpose of God’s law? "B the law is the knowledge of sin." Romans 3:20
The law does not save; it reveals the sinners need of salvation. The law does not justify, or cleanse, only the blood of Jesus does, It only shows our need of cleansing. It is God’s great mirror, reflecting the sinner’s need of cleansing and redemption. Which one of God’s ten commandment law was nailed to the cross? "For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point he is guilty of all." James 1:10
The meeting of religious leaders to pray for this nation was a mockery. How can they pray against lawlessness to end when they themselves are not willing to keep all of God’s law? Why are they as selective as to which one to keep and then pray that crime will end?
What should be the evidence he the world that we are Christians? "And hereby we do know that we know him if we keep his commandments. He that saith, I know him and keepeth not his commandments is a liar and the truth is not in him. He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also to walk even as he walked." 1 John 2:3-6
How did Jesus walk? See Luke 4:16 "If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love, even as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love." John 15:10 My God is no respecter of persons. He has only one standard of righteousness for humanity. Millions of people will be lost because they believe their pastors more than they believe the bible. Any preacher who tells you that it is not important to keep all of God’s commandments because we are under grace is dangerous. What has God promised to do for New Testament believers where his law is concerned?
"For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days," saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their mind and write them in their hearts and I will be to them a God and they shall be to me a people.’ Hebrews 8:10 The preacher says God’s law is abolished, no one can keep it, and we are now under a new dispensation called Grace.
God on the other hand says I will put my laws into their minds and write them in their hearts. Whom are you going to believe God or your preacher? What is the motive for obeying God’s law in the Old and New Testament? "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart and with all thy soul and with all thy might. Deuteronomy 6:5
"If you love me, keep my commandments.’ John 14:15 The New Testament is crystal clear people are saved solely by what Jesus Christ does for them (grace). Law keeping and good works are the result of a saving relationship with Jesus Christ, but never a means to obtaining that relationship. "If you love me keep my commandments.
