How badly do we need an indoor sports facility? Just ask the organizers of the Helen of the West Netball Club Festival. The competition was plagued by heavy rain on opening night and again on Saturday, which led to the highly anticipated championship match being called off.

St Lucia Electricity Services Limited (Lucelec) held its second annual Scholarship Social at Spinners in Union recently. The activity is staged to celebrate the achievements of the outstanding performers of the scholarship scheme, as well as to give the students the opportunity to interact with each other and with Lucelec personnel in a less formal and fun setting.

St Lucia’s team for the 17th OECS Swimming Championships in Grenada from November 2-4 was officially announced recently, during a short ceremony at the Rodney Heights Aquatic Centre. The competition is once again under the title sponsorship of Sagicor.

No doubt you’re familiar with the old saying “Alls well that ends well.” Try telling that to the All Weld Incorporated football team. They lost 6-0 to Landings/Brice and Company in the finals of the Commercial Football League Sunday evening at Mindoo Phillip Park.

At precisely eight o’clock on the morning of Saturday October 13, over 70 golfers started play at the Cap Estate Golf and Country Club. Players had been foregathering at the new and rather grand clubhouse from before 7am where coffee buns and juice were laid out for the sustenance of competitors. It was the Annual BMW golf tournament.

You really have to wonder whether ideas and recommendations put forward during a two-day Strategic Planning Seminar for youth and sports will ever get the attention they deserve from government. After all, over the years similar seminars have come and gone with the usual talk and no action.

Things are really heating up in the 2007 Commercial League Football Tournament as the remaining teams still alive in the competition, look to advance to Sunday’s grand final at Mindoo Phillip Park. Allweld and Ferrands Food Products took a giant step in that direction with quarter-final victories Tuesday evening at Mindoo Phillip Park.

It was really no big surprise when Guinness Veterans Knockout football champions VSADC dominated an 18-man All Star squad which was recently selected.  Champions VSADC have seven players on the squad while beaten finalist Courts Spartans have five selectees. Semi-finalist Niabinghi and Soufriere have two and one selectee respectively.

Sandals Regency went undefeated and as a result captured the Inter-hotel Netball competition last Friday evening on the Barclay’s court.

Sport was high on the agenda when Courts St Lucia Limited made presentations for August and September on Thursday at their head branch on Chaussee Road.

Her reputation is gone now. So too are Marion Jones’ medals. Jones gave back the five medals she won at the Sydney Olympics on Monday and agreed to forfeit all other results dating back to September 1, 2000, further punishment for her admission that she was a drug cheat.

After the completion of the preliminary round and semi-final play, the finals are set for the Inter-hotel Netball Competition. The competition is organized by the St Lucia Hotel and Tourism Association (SLHTA).

All week Courts Spartans were sick and tired of hearing about VSADC and their success in local football. Following Sunday’s finals of the Guinness Veterans Football Tournament at the Beausejour Cricket Ground (BCG), Spartans have more to moan and groan about.

The on-again off-again Midnight Madness netball competition recently took place at the Vigie Multi-Purpose Sports Complex. Although it was a fun-filled night for the teams who came dressed or in some cases undressed for this late night spectacle, not everything went according to plan.

Following a highly competitive and exciting preliminary round in the Guinness Veterans Football Tournament the stage is set for semi-final play.

Food and football came together this week, as local supermarket chain Super J became the official sponsor of four-time league champions, Northern United Sports Club.  Super J, Marketing Manager Sancha Raggie-James said,  “this partnership is a perfect fit”.

For one day anyway bodybuilding and boxing share the same stage in a joint exhibition this afternoon at the Derek Walcott Square. It’s all part of the Guinness Road Show program as part of the St Lucia Amateur Boxing Association’s mandate for the development of boxing islandwide.

Telecommunications giant Cable and Wireless gave the St Lucia Football Association (SLFA) a big lift on Tuesday by sponsoring the 2007 Under-19 Football Competition.
